How to Schedule Send a Text on iPhone and Android

Shortcuts on iPhone, Google Messages on Android, and when to move to a team scheduler.

Choose the method that matches your phone

An iPhone can use a personal automation in Shortcuts to send a message at a selected time. On Android, Google Messages has a scheduled send control inside the conversation. These methods work differently, especially when you need a message to send only once rather than repeat.

Before setting anything up, check the recipient and write the complete message. Use a message you are comfortable sending without another review at delivery time. Phone settings, permissions, connectivity, and the messaging service can affect whether a scheduled action completes.

Create an iPhone time of day automation in Shortcuts

Shortcuts is an alternative when you want a time based message action. It requires more setup than the Send Later feature in Apple Messages. The exact labels depend on your software version, so read the confirmation and repeat settings before enabling the automation.

  1. Open Shortcuts and select Automation.
  2. Create a new personal automation and choose Time of Day as the trigger.
  3. Set the desired time and review the available daily, weekly, or monthly repeat choices.
  4. Choose to run immediately if your device offers that option and you want an unattended send.
  5. Add the Send Message action, entering the message text and selecting the recipient.
  6. Review any action setting that asks to show a compose screen or require interaction. Configure it for your intended behavior.
  7. Save the automation and check that it is enabled.

On older interfaces, you may see Ask Before Running instead of Run Immediately. If confirmation remains required, the phone can prompt you at the trigger time instead of sending unattended. Review permissions in advance and use a harmless test with a consenting recipient if you are unfamiliar with the setup.

Prevent an unintended repeat on iPhone

A Time of Day trigger repeats according to the pattern you choose. It is not automatically a single future send. For an isolated message, disable or delete the automation after its intended run and check the conversation for the outcome. If you need a future date outside the next recurrence, this basic setup needs extra care and may be a poor fit.

Keep the phone powered on with the connectivity required for the message type. Shortcuts runs on your device, so do not assume the action will execute while the phone is switched off. Permissions or system behavior may still require attention. Verify the result rather than assuming the trigger guarantees delivery.

For a supported iMessage conversation, Apple's built in Send Later control can be simpler. Read the guide to native text scheduling for that approach and its limits.

Schedule a message in Google Messages on Android

Use Google Messages for these steps. A manufacturer messaging app can have different menus, even if its icon or name looks similar.

  1. Open Google Messages and select the intended conversation.
  2. Type your message and review its recipient.
  3. Touch and hold the send button to display scheduling choices.
  4. Choose a suggested time or select a custom date and time.
  5. Confirm your selection and tap the scheduled send control.
  6. Check the conversation for the pending message and its scheduled time.

Tap the pending item's scheduling indicator to review the available controls for updating it, sending immediately, or deleting it. If you change the text or time, confirm the updated schedule afterward. If the menu does not appear, verify the app and its supported version before relying on another app's instructions.

Check connectivity and local timing

Google Messages needs the phone to be on and connected for delivery. If it is offline at the selected time, sending can wait until it reconnects. SMS, MMS, and RCS have different connection requirements, so confirm which message type the conversation uses.

For either phone, compare the scheduling interface's time with the recipient's local time. Recheck pending actions after travel or changes to time zone settings. Review the message again if plans change, and stop any repeat action that no longer serves its original purpose.

What native phone scheduling lacks for teams

These methods use one chosen send time for a message in one channel. They do not provide a shared team plan that calculates every recipient's time zone, applies configurable quiet hours rules, and requires approvals. A repeating Shortcuts trigger does not supply those controls or coordinate email, SMS, and WhatsApp.

ScheduleSend is a subscription service for B2B teams scheduling those channels at each recipient's local time, with quiet hours rules and approvals. Open the ScheduleSend planner to plan team communication and review pricing for subscription options. Obtain consent and follow local messaging rules before sending.
