How to Schedule a Text Message on iPhone and Android

Step by step ways to schedule a text message on a phone, and where a phone stops being enough for a team.

Choose the messaging app before choosing a send time

You can schedule a text message with tools already available on many phones, but the steps depend on your app and the kind of message you are sending. Apple Messages offers Send Later for iMessage on supported iPhones. Google Messages offers scheduled sending on supported Android phones. Other messaging apps may have different controls or no scheduling option.

Start by checking the app name and updating it if necessary. Confirm that the recipient can receive the message type you intend to use. Scheduling an iMessage is different from scheduling an SMS, even when both appear in the same conversation list. A scheduled message also needs a final review before it leaves your account.

Schedule an iMessage in iPhone Messages

On an iPhone that supports Send Later, use an iMessage conversation. This feature does not schedule ordinary SMS messages. If the option is missing, confirm that your software supports it and that the conversation uses iMessage.

  1. Open Messages and select an existing iMessage conversation, or start a new one with the intended recipient.
  2. Write the message, including any details the recipient needs to act on it.
  3. Tap the plus button beside the message field. Find and select Send Later, expanding the available options if needed.
  4. Tap the displayed time and choose the date and time you want.
  5. Review the recipient, text, and selected time. Tap the send arrow to schedule the message.

The conversation shows the pending message with its scheduled time. Apple stores a scheduled iMessage for delivery, so your iPhone does not need to remain online at the moment it sends. Delivery still depends on the recipient being reachable through iMessage. The interface only allows scheduling within its supported future window.

Change or cancel a pending iMessage

Open the conversation and find the scheduled message. Use its edit controls to change the time, send it immediately, or delete it. To revise the text, use the message editing options available for that pending item. Check the conversation afterward to confirm the intended message and time remain scheduled.

Schedule a text in Google Messages on Android

These instructions apply to Google Messages, which may differ from the app installed by your phone manufacturer. Confirm that Google Messages is the messaging app you use before looking for its scheduling menu.

  1. Open Google Messages and choose the correct conversation.
  2. Enter your message and review the recipient, especially if several contacts have similar names.
  3. Touch and hold the send button to open the scheduling options.
  4. Select a suggested time or choose a custom date and time.
  5. Confirm the selection and tap the scheduled send control to queue the message.

A scheduled item appears in the conversation. Tap its scheduling indicator to inspect the available update, immediate send, or deletion options. Menu labels can vary by app version. If holding the send button does nothing, check that you are using a supported version of Google Messages.

Keep the phone powered on and connected when delivery is due. A message can wait until connectivity returns if the phone is offline. The required connection depends on whether the conversation uses SMS, MMS, or RCS. Scheduling is not a guarantee that the recipient will receive or read the message at the exact selected moment.

Check timing and content before you leave it queued

Read the selected time as a time in the scheduling interface, rather than assuming it follows the recipient. If you are traveling or contacting someone in another region, compare the intended delivery time with their local clock. Recheck pending messages after changing device time zone settings.

  • Confirm the recipient and remove sensitive details that do not belong in a text.
  • Check whether the message will still make sense if delivery is delayed.
  • Cancel messages when appointments, deadlines, or circumstances change.
  • Obtain permission before sending business messages and respect requests to stop.

What native text scheduling lacks for teams

Native scheduling is useful for personal conversations, but each queued message has one selected send time in one messaging channel. These tools do not provide a shared plan that interprets each recipient's time zone, applies configurable quiet hours rules across a customer list, and requires a teammate's approval before sending. An individual scheduling control does not establish those team safeguards.

ScheduleSend is a subscription service for B2B teams scheduling email, SMS, and WhatsApp messages at each recipient's local time, with quiet hours rules and approvals. Use the ScheduleSend planner to plan those messages, then review pricing for the subscription options. Your team remains responsible for recipient consent and applicable messaging rules.
